Hey all. I'm not very familiar or experienced on the DC2 or the DD series Walkmans so need some help. I've been able to solve the cracked gear issues on the DC2 and DD33 I have so I'm pretty stoked about that :) Although I am having another issue with the DC2. The FF and REW don't seem to work properly. When I press REW is will turn both tape reels or spools. I read somewhere that bending something in the mechanism will solve this? Just can't remember where I read it. If someone can provide a service manual or advice on a possible fix it would be very helpful. After the repairs on the cracked gears on both the DD33 and DC2 the sound is amazing so I would love to have the DC2 functioning correctly on all aspects.

    Regards,

Sorry i don't know the answer to your question but,

what is your solution for central gear repair??
Please share your experience. Did you use another gear to add some teeth to your cracked gear ?

Repaired with parts of another gear. Although I didn't use another original gear. I have a lot of walkmans that are used for parts so I was able to find a small gear with very similar tooth and thickness also. It took me a few times to get it correct as it's such a small piece that is needed to be cut and glued. But the end result works!! No more wow and flutter and the DD33 I have no longer clicks. I can only hear a slight click when I press the player up to my ears. At a normal distance it's dead quiet. The DC2 is only slightly louder but cannot hear it at normal distance and wow and flutter is also gone. Just need to fix the FF and REW issue.

Fixing the FFW and REW is a bit of a pain in the neck: the centre gear is moved up or down to two different positions to get FFW and REW engaged, but the gear are very thin and the tolerance in the positioning is ~ 0.2 mm. The DC2 service manual is the most detailed on how to fix the DD tape transport, including FFW and REW. But it takes a bit of courage as you have to bend the lever that are pressed by the FFW and REW buttons. Another options is to simply add slices of electric tape below the buttons actuator so they pressed the centre gear slightly more.

Was able to download a service manual did read that some bending is required. Will try it out when I get a chance.

I found out my DDIII has issue with rewind, the reel gear does not properly engages and it slippers. Not that i use FFW or REW in a walkman, but it annoys me not to have it fully functional. Were you able to fix your DC2 ?

Yep fixed the rew and fwd. There's a small gear with a spring underneath and I found that the gear was put on upside down.

I fixed the DDIII too, but instead of prying out the lever I just added a bit of tape under the rew button actuator. Not very professional, but less risky and reversible :). Anyway, any time I look at the DD mechanical design for FFW and REW I think it is too fragile: the alignment tolerances are very minimal for a unit that has to be carried around; and all that for moving the buttons from the side to the front to minimize the walkman dimension. I think the "planar gears" approach of most walkman's is more robust and less prone to gear misalignment.
