Both I think, as my late Father bought an SG-J500L here in the UK. I posted pictures of it in the thread you started about them.

The L on the end indicates it has Longwave. Not having LW on a European radio back then would put it into the same category as cassette decks without rewind.

Maybe the SG-J555 was next years model or something. They occasionally appear in red

As does the SG-J550L. I have no idea what the difference between the 500L and the 550L is

I am sure I saw one in white on ebay.fr but can't find a picture

Back to small plastic record players while looking for pictures of SGs I spotted this one

People want far more than SG-J500 money for them though.

It seems the only difference--form what I can see, aside from lack of Ambiance button--is in the aesthetic details, such as the speaker grilles & screened-on labels. I could be wrong, as I did see the rise of square speaker elements during the mid-80's and the '550L seems to have them. But again, it's probably only aesthetic.

And speaking of aesthetics: Oh, MAN...!! Being the only other model of 'box I considered getting in the day was a National (Victor?) in red w/removable cassette player, I would've loved to have a '500 in red! I don't think they were offered in anything but charcoal/graphite gray in the 'States, from what I've seen... but still!:delighted:

For completeness here is a "white" SG-J500 although like many plastics that age it appears to have gone cream, and a silver one.

I don't think I have seen either of those in a UK auction.

I had to go look at mine Longman, it's the right side one above, notice that the speakers are more exposed than the red multi-band version. It must have been a popular model to have some many versions.

A white one? Hunting that down would probably be the death of me...!:nwink:
Now the silver, that looks much more like my first one--tuner & all.

Yes... and yet, it's so seldom heard of.
