My newest baby arrived to Papa! Philips 8814, "the Elephant", it is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L !!! Time to put all these babies Discmans back in the drawer and start playing with a real toy!
Welcome Jorge! Another Discman fan!! I to love the Xp5 and still have mine..in the box! both my D50 and the Xp5 need some restoring so I'm eager to see some of your posts!
Wow. Beauties!!! XP5 I am afraid to mess with, but I will post photos of D50 spread all over the "surgical table" if you are interested. I sent my XP5 battery to Kaosun for rejuvenation, IMHO all Discmans sound a bit better when played off the batteries. Right now my "bedside" player is D-7 simply because it is my latest success at resurrection, but normally it is XP5. XP5 in a box, once again, Wow! it is beyond me why people hunt the previous model, XP7. XP5 looks better and has better specs. Going back to dissection, "Elephant" is a real piece of fun!
I've been following your discussion here and seriously giving thought to sending my units to Kaosun for repair. As far as your D50 undergoing surgery, I'd love to see it as I'm a huge chicken when it comes to opening these babies and I love watching other "surgeons" perform their work
Wow, that is indeed a great Discman collection! I have also a few jewel from SONY: D350, D50, Z555... Many of them have problems with the laser, but frankly i don't use them very much. I prefer cassettes. Anyway they have a very cool design!
I hear ya! At the final stages of Nakamichi LX3 restoration I made test recordings of 3kHz, White Noise, etc, then finally used Mapleshade jazz CD to test Nak with my own ears, not oscilloscope. Used lowly D-33 to play CDs into Nak. I still cannot believe that I loved the sound of cassette "ripped" off CD much better than the original ("master") sound of CD. Once in a while I repeat the test. Try it!
below is a direct quote from my correspondence with Kaosun (used without his permission, of course!): kaosun The battery for the XP5 is less likely to be modified by Li-ion solution. The 2 Li-ion batteries connected in serial is 8.4V when fully charged. So your SONY 9V power adapter is capable to charge the batteries. However, the power supply of the XP5 is +/-6V, even if I install two serials of Li-ion batteries, the 6V power adapter is too low to charge 8.4V batteries. If I open your power adapter and increase the output to +/-9V, the player couldn't bear it, so a step-down power supply will be installed inside of the XP5. So the design will be quite hard and pricey. The suggestion is modifying it by 10 Ni-MH 1200MA1.2V cells. 5 cells for each polar which means 5(6V) cells for + and 5 for -. Estimate playing time will be 3-4 hrs. What do you think?
I always thought cassettes were lovely but didn't sound really well back in those days... Until I got my Marantz PMD-430 and recorded from Spotify to a good TDK SA. In my case, I had to go through 20 years of obsession with CDs, SACDs to finally give up and fall back to where I started: vinyl and cassettes. PMD-430 looks wicked, almost want to say: better than Nagra Recently sold LX-5 restored for me by Willy Hermann to finance this Philips Elephant: Someone, PLEASE send me a screenshot with the option "Insert As Thumbnail", I do not see it on my screen. I am using Firefox 51.0.1
