Has anyone ever fixed a Sony WM-EX5 or WM-EX3 or similar models (like pretty much the whole »grove« series I guess)? A common problem with these models seems to be that the mechanic gets messed up and need to get a reset. The operating mode is set via an electric magnet switch thingy and it looks like this can run out of sync for whatever reason. This is pretty complicated - would be great if someone has experience with this problem. Here is the part about the reset from the manual: I must say I do not really understand the section 1., »Setting«. I think it says: Connect the two terminals, make sure BL SKIP is set off, apply power, then disconnect the terminals. How does that make sense? Thanks
Ah okay. Now I know what the 1. Setting part means. By connecting the two terminals, the little switch which detects weather a cassette is mounted is bypassed. So you can operate the mechanism without a cassette. Which is what they refer to in the sentence above. Well. Writing good documentation is hard Guess I will figure out the rest with enough time and patience as well. Maybe if I succeed, I will post a step-by-step guide. If anyone would be interested …
Everything is sensed using 2 optical sensors on this machine. There is nothing to service if you de-solder the board. its either the belt or something on the electronics side.
Sometimes the grey plastic piece on the top right gets dislodged making the mechanism struck. The piece also locks the door. Readjusting doesn't need removing the board.
Thank you very much for your answer! I was thinking the service manual was referring more to initial assembly than servicing because it just sounds like rather poor design if it takes that much effort to properly reset the mechanics once in a while. I replaced the belt and the mechanical malfunction indeed seems to come from the open/close mechanism/button. Because the button was kinda jammed and now it works again. However, I could not find the source to this. Where is this piece located? Maybe you could mark it in the pictures attached? Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help!
it's on the inside under the flywheel that's farther from the motor. you might need to de-solder the board if got dislodged on the outside.
can you post a video that shows what is going in the inside, the door was jammed because the player locks the door while operation. the belt probably lost friction mid-engage so the door was stuck locked. Also, you didn't mention what was even wrong with the player.
Did you ever get this issue resolved with your player? My mechanism got stuck in the same way while replacing the belt, and then I couldn't get it open. After managing to get the door off, I realized that the head was engaged. If the soldering that jumper wire fixes the issue, that's great, I'll try that. But I shaven't been able to track down any information on anyone who's had this same issue, and the manual I found was partial and pretty vague. I'm planning on using this as my daily driver when finished, because it's compact, lightweight, and I won't have to carry around my valuable WM-3 with me everywhere.
Was this issue ever resolved? I too replaced the belt on my WM-EX5 only to lock me out- door locked closed with play engaged and zero power despite fully charged battery. Section 2 service note says, “Connect the motor [where the diagram has multiple points] and plunger to the AUDIO board [did they meant ‘on the AUDIO board’] using jumper wires.” [an extension tool is recommended]. Then short circuit between SERVICE MODE terminal and HOLDER terminal. Then “Supply 1.3V to the + and - terminals of the battery using a regulated power supply. Then unsolder the SERVICE MODE terminal. Well this sounds easy (sarcasm). Did anyone have success with this?
