Sure you can, but you will not have very much control over what you are doing which means the end product will be mediocre.

@TooCooL4 tnx for your answer. I couldn't find any article or video on the internet about this subject that shows the difference between recording with line in and mic in from smartphone/laptop to walkman and explains the different facets and results of it.
I'm aware that a walkman with lots of controls for recording including a line in means a high end walkman with dito pricetag. Unless you know a model that produces acceptable results with a friendly price :)

@TooCooL4 I make my musictapes on my JVC tapedeck W201. Perfect results.
I am looking for a handy portable recordable one as seen in the link above so i can record a tape and share immediatly when i'm not around my house.

Typically a Mic input will require a much lower input level than a Line input. Too much signal will cause distortion.
You could get around that by keeping the volume on the computer very low. If that isn't an option, e,g when recording from something like a CD player you need an attenuator.

    You could buy one

Or if you know how to solder make one

It is only a few resistors.

p.s. When I first got a CD player back in 1989 I was in lodgings and wanted to run in through the DIN socket on my Sony CFS45L.
Despite the input being designated "Line In" I had to put an attenuator between the two, as without it the sound was very overdriven and distorted.

@Longman Thank you so much! Exactly what i was looking for: an attenuator! there is a solution for everything! A fraction of the price of an expensive walkman. I will definitly buy one!!

I think this is the way-workaround: Let me know!

@Longman : how can i know which dB attenuator from the link you gave should I select? And should I select electrec mic? Must I look up specifications of both Walkman and smartphone?

That is the difficult bit. An advantage of making your own attenuator is that you can easily adjust the resistor values if it is too loud or too quiet. Resistors are literally pennies each.

You certainly "hit the nail squarely on the head" there, Longman... I went through the same woes when bootlegging free full-length listening on Rhapsody to cassette, and when dubbing Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver along with select tracks from Disco collection CDs to 8-track for playback on the system at work. I won't even think about using a portable in-car unless it has a line-level output. And the same goes for any computer I may wish to pipe sound from into my home system.
