A good friend in my Spanish class knew I collected Walkman etc and yesterday he gave me an Aiwa HS-P05 in silver in great condition .He said it works but it has a whining noise and oh boy does it have a whining noise but with headphones on it is hidden and the machine plays FF and rewinds .I am wondering if these machines have the same problem as the Sony DD series Walkman and it has a split gear .Can anyone give me any help as to how to cure this problem as it is a very nice machine and at one tim, when it came out .it was the smallest walkman you could buy at that time? Many thanks

I guess your walkman needs a new belt, some good cleaning and lubrication and adjustment.
AIWA didn't make any walkman with direct drive (DD) mechanism.

Thanks for your help . How easy is it to change the belt on this unitas the unit seems sealed the basest there are screws on the sides and Wonder f the base drops off if these screws are removed .I would hate to damage it as DIY is not my best suit

Thanks for your help .Since writing I have tracked down A hi -fi company who still carry out repairs to Old /retro products Wilkison Hi -FIi near Manchester England and I can drive there .I saw their name mentioned when a Seller was selling a Micro -cassette Boombox and they had repaired it .They charge about £30 an hour and will give a quote so I think I would be better served using them for the reason I gave above repairs are not my forte .I shall try them on this unit especially since it came free Thanks again

Interesting, I have a HS-P06 (uses same mechanism as yours) which works but makes a kinda squealing whining noise too (but only sometimes for whatever reason), With mine I've messed with the mechanism for hours and I think the motor in mine is just busted in that regard. I was planning on experimenting with a motor transplant with this one to see if it's possible. Anyway good luck with yours sure is a nice looking model.
