Hey Stero2go! I'm Charlie and I've recently got back in to cassettes this year. I've got a Sony WM6DC which I really love - I'm looking at trying to get the most out of it for recording. I also set up a cassette label, image attached of the first release! Looking to expand my knowledge a bit on the technical side of things this year. Hello Charlie, Welcome to stere2go, may your tape label succeed. If you are interested, I have a theory that you can get the best out of a d6c by changing the tape speed to the slowest possible setting and matching that speed with the music you are recording. this should allow in theory for higher quality playback. Do you have a website for your label or is it still in it's infancy? Enjoy the forum!
Hey Command8! Interesting.. I will try that out this week - I'd never thought of playing with the tape speed.. I will let you know the results! Thanks for the kind words! The website is still in development really, I've been doing digital releases online but looking to re release more of the back catologue this year on cassette. I'd love to one day to be able to do all the manufacturing / recording of the cassettes myself, but for now I am using a company to have them made up professionally. Thanks! Charlie
@Command8 why would slower tape speed result in higher quality? I have a high speed 4 track Tascam which records very high quality
Interesting theory. Two things that would remain constant are the bias oscillator frequency and the RIAA equalisation (if recording from Vinyl). However, I am not sure if the change you suggest would improve things or make them worse. Of course Making Things Worse is very subjective. Most Valve / Tube amplifiers introduce quite a lot of distortion but many people like the sound of it, especially if it is a Guitar amp.

Welcome to Stereo2go fattape. Command8 personally thinking slowing down the speed of a recording on D6C, would make the recording worse. Firstly you would be trying to put more information in a smaller section of the tape. Secondly you have the disadvantage of the playback being locked to that machine or another machine that can match the same slow speed of playback. Vinyl half speed mastering is something completely different. If you think about it, why are faster and faster R2R machines better? They use 15IPS or 30IPS, if slower was better they would use 7.5IPS or even 3 1/4IPS. If slower speeds are better they would run them slower and save tape / money. By all means give it a try, but from my point of view it would be a waste of time.
