A UK company is preparing to release a new tape formula. The website states they have BASF/Emtec technicians working for them! This is very exciting news https://audiopancake.com/
After reading that I was wondering if there have been any advances in tape technology in the last 20 years. Traditional Hard drives still use magnetic media, which must have very high performance to achieve 10TB + However, the media doesn't have to bend and probably doesn't need to be linear storing nothing but 1s and 0s.
I was wondering the same thing Longman, I have to believe there's some CAD they can use now to help with the quality, maybe not CAD but measurement instrumentation that wasn't available or was cost inefficient back then.
I guess the cost of analysis has dropped significantly. You can generate tone and frequency specs as part of free software like Audacity which would be impossible even ten years ago, and the time saved therefore would be enormous as you don’t need half the hardware. I guess also the environmental standards have changed massively, storage and transport of chemicals has changed not just from massive increase in air freight but also health and safety costs. But then again, rail transport is a lot easier today because many lines are same gauge now. I think China laid a EU compatible railway recently so they no longer have to switch train freight at hubs, they can travel straight into Germany from Beijing.
