both recent purchases and i'm comparing them to my Sony CDP-2700 player which has CXD 1244 (like the 77es king of cd players) with twin AD1860 DACs.

Welcome! and definitely post your findings! Technics SL-XP5, Denon DCP-150 and Sony D-50MkII(aka D-7) were the best-sounding Discmans in my then collection! None of them came close to my "workhorses": Naim CDX and Naim CDS3. One-piece Linn Classik also sounded much better through the headphones. A few years ago I fixed CD swing-arm mechanism and also did full recap on the first-ever CD spinner, Marantz CD63 (rebranded Philips CD100). It sounded surprisingly good to my ears (spoiled by CDS3 and Wadia 781i) and it also sounded better than any of my Discmans

wow cool. I have a Meridian MCD which is a rebadged CD100 with better audio section including some rare Solid Aluminium tantalums etc. The laser is not finding the TOC and i have to repair but should have it up and running soon.

The swing-arm mechanism has a single laser, actually whilst we are on topic about single lasers, i believe the XP5 in terms of portables with a single laser is probably the best transport of any portable cd player.

I will add a dedicated headphone amp circuit to my Meridian MCD eventually

I am thinking doing the same for Yamaha CD player which I got as a "freeby add-on" when buying Yamaha cassette deck. Because of all that empty space inside Yamaha, my project will be much easier ;)
