I really like the fancy Walkman I bought for having autoreverse, AMS and all that (although the WM-D3 is great too, would be even better if I could have it repaired)... I already have a thread about it at https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/small-cheap-walkman-for-daily-playing-with-helpful-features.5253/ that I will soon update with a picture or two, in case anyone's interested. The only thing that's missing is a remote control, and the seller I bought it from, while a great seller, will probably not be selling on eBay for a while due to all the issues with COVID-19 we're having. Now I know the remote that sometimes came with the WM-EX550 (making it technically a WM-EX552, I believe) was a simple one with three buttons and no display or anything in particular. That would be okay, but I'm curious, is there some other remote control with more features that would be compatible with that model? I know there are at least two different kind of sockets for Sony remotes, one that includes a normal 3.5mm jack, and one that doesn't, making a remote mandatory. But I have no idea about compatibility in a more general sense. Secondly, even if the original remote is more or less the best I could get, are there other similar ones that came with other models that would be compatible? The more compatible models I know about, the more items I can search for, and hopefully get one before never.
Look in New Posts for the thread started by Recaptcha. It discusses various plugs and adapters. Do be careful as there are many remotesthat share a common input but won't run a given player. Get the correct remote model number use it for reference. I had to look at photos in sales listings and ask sellers to send me model numbers of known working remotes to find the correct one for mine. At least it''s on the front in the photos posted by Silver965. On many it's on the back and rarely shows in photos. Don
Thanks! Unlike the model that Recaptcha got, thankfully, mine has the type of socket where you can plug either the proprietary remote, or regular headphones too. That was one of the things "my" seller recommended to look for when picking a model (since the nice thing about him is that he wasn't particularly eager to sell me one of his restored models, but instead he told me what to look for and what to watch out for in cheap broken-belts models). He also told me to be wary of some models that require the remote to access all the functions (like enabling Dolby B for instance) as they don't have them all on the Walkman itself, which seems... a bit dumb, but maybe a good marketing tactic to sell more replacement remotes when people lost them or broke them. So I'm not in a huge rush to get a remote since my EX-550 is perfectly usable without. But I'll keep an eye on what shows up and try to pay attention to the model numbers, although it's not always entirely easy to understand which remote model came with which Walkman mode. But indeed, since most of the time I have to ask sellers questions anyway (usually "Will you ship to Italy?" because eBay has made "automatic" international shipping practically unusable, kudos to them, trying to be Amazon and failing, sigh), so I might as well ask them to look at the remote's model number.
