Hi, I am just getting into walkman repair. I have fixed my first one, a WM-F100 III and am now filled with excitement to continue fixing some of the broken walkmans of the world haha. Anyway, i'm mostly lurking but the one question I have a had, and I may post it later on the tech forum: Some of these walkmans have provision for AA battery & gumstick, like my WM-F100 III. I would like to get a gumstick adapter for it so I don't have to use the bulky AA... has someone made one of these or can they still be found anywhere?? Anyway, thanks again for this wonderful resource. Super excited with my new hobby
Gumstick batteries have been discussed many times here. http://stereo2go.com/forums/threads...mstick-type-battery-in-this-day-and-age.1236/ The general consensus is that new Vapex ones are better than 20 year old Sony ones. Aiwa personal stereos are a different matter as their batteries were Lead Acid.
I have pleasant memories of Santa Cruz having driven down 101 from SanFran in the 90's. Scary being an Aussie used to driving on the left but it's a nice spot and reminds me of home with the hills rolling down to the beach. I had my iRiver in regular use back then but like you I found and fixed a cassette Walkman about 10 years ago and then I got bitten. Chasing all the top Walkman and Aiwa models never ends and gets expensive. So with the gumstick batteries I find cassette Walkman work quite well with the Pisen ex China 1450Mah batteries you can find on Ebay. I would steer clear of the myriad of white generic gumsticks on eBay as some of those don't seem to hold charge for more than a few months. It's a different story with MD Walkman and gumsticks but that's another (long) story. Welcome aboard. You have chosen a great hobby!
thank you! Have a few parts coming in the mail - I can't wait to take this adventure into walkman restoration!
It's fun but at the same time frustrating. Have a space laid out that you can leave for a week or two, you always have to order more parts. I have one of the silicone blue mats, they work great for a surface and they have compartments for screws. For the little screws I use Frog Tape so I don't lose them. Take photos and notes, no matter how good of memory you have, you'll forget where a part goes. Lastly, never force anything, if there's resistance your missing a screw or there's a wire binding. Good luck!
