Hi all, Most of the walkmans I work on have perfect radios and problematic tape mechanisms but today there's a flip. A very tidy Aiwa HS-RD7 complete with its weatherproof shell, has good tape performance and AM radio is fine but there is a problem with FM. The range offered on the dial is 88-108, left to right. It will only pick up a couple of stations at the left hand end, approximately 88-89, but these stations are broadcasting at 105 and 107. I disconnected the pointer, in case the pointer and the actual tuner had got out of alignment, but operating the tuner without the pointer makes no difference (still picks up just the same couple of stations at one end of its operation). So I'm guessing it's an e-problem of some kind, and quite beyond my experience - does anyone have any thoughts as to what might cause this type of problem? Not looking for a machine-specific solution, just some ideas as to where to start. Thanks in advance.
In case anyone is able to help, the relevant manual is available from Elektrotanya, it covers the HS-T28, -T30, -T40, and RD7 and their A-suffixed variants; it is found under the T30 reference at https://elektrotanya.com/aiwa_hs-t30_sm.pdf/download.html.
Hi ... so intuitively I am reminded of the variable capacitor not calibrated correctly ... usually it mounts on old radios like in this case .. looking at the variable capacitor of these radios ... on the back there are connections (usually the twisted wire of the AM antenna) this is just to recognize it ... This variable capacitor can have multiple sections for different AM-FM bands etc ... in addition to the connections on the back there are like 4 screws .. which are actually compensators for be able to calibrate the radio ... as in this case Not having a photo I downloaded the service manual through your link ... and found this (see photo) Check the L202 that it is not squashed or moved ... unsoldered .... it is enough that someone has widened the copper coil a bit and shifted the frequency ..... If it goes well ... try to turn the TC203 screw a bit .. Before turning the screw, mark with a marker the position in which it is (only one point) ... so d to find the original position
This may have been a good call, sir, thank you. The L202 appears to have been damaged, there is an indentation that could be the result of a screwdriver jab. Darned if I can see how; there is no clear route from anywhere into that part of the board, it's on the under (mechanism) side and I would have said the board hadn't ever been moved (given the pristine state of the sticky surfaces that keep the generously extendable wiring - thanks Aiwa! - in place and the neat state of that wiring). Not trying to avoid blame myself but... anyway, do I now just cautiously push the coil around and see what happens? Thanks again.
