I picked up a Sony CFD-222 dual cassette/CD player from the Thrift the other day. Battery compartment loaded with battery crumbs. Small spring missing from deck 1 mechanism. No light from the power LED, except when cassette deck is active. Got it all apart, fixed the wonky deck. Cleaned up the mechanisms. Discovered the 4-way selector switch on top is broken. The contact slider inside was stuck all the way down with its connector arm broken off. Pretty flimsy looking. Got it desoldered and apart. Pretty sure glue won’t do the trick so I’m looking for a switch that’ll work. No luck with the OEM part number (1-762-865-11). Does anyone know of a replacement or permanent fix? Thanks in advance! Good luck in finding another. Since it is an internal part could you reinforce it ? A colleague fixed a plastic part in his car indicator switch by drilling into both parts with a fine drill then snapping it off. I have reinforced plastic repairs with small pieces of Piano wire. Obviously you still need glue, and I have read good things recently about Loctite Plastics Glue https://www.amazon.co.uk/Loctite-Al...ocphy=1006943&hvtargid=pla-700412402623&psc=1 but reinforcement should make it stronger.
Thanks! I've decided to give that route a try. I've got the pieces glued back together now. I'm going to reassemble them so far as to see what I've got for clearances in the housing to see what kind of room I've got for reinforcements. A horse shoe piece made to go over the broken area and tie it into the main slider might work if there's room. The tab that sticks off the slider is so tiny - I can't imagine this is the first one of these that has broken. Granted, it's a 23-year old boom box, so support from Sony isn't expected, but I've been able to find parts for most of my older equipment, or adequate fixes when parts aren't available. I just find it hard to believe that this switch, with what I feel is a weak design, hasn't been made available as a replacement on what was not an inexpensive item when new. Oh well. I'm not ready to give up on it just yet... CW
They probably were available for a few years after the units were made. the problem now is that all the service and parts depots that used to sell stuff (mainly for repairing TVs and VCRs) have closed. 23 years ago there was still a monthly magazine in the UK for repair https://worldradiohistory.com/Practical_Television_Magazine.htm I am sure a lot of wannabe TV repairmen who ended up working in other industries (like myself) bought it. A common complaint now is that you can't even get parts for High End devices like Nakamichi tape decks. You might get lucky. I recently bought a new pinch roller for my Sharp VZ2500 on ebay and was surprised when it turned up in a genuine and sealed Sharp bag. Of course it might be as old as the original. p.s looking through the last TV magazine on that website I tried the URL for Grandata who were probably the biggest supplier of TV parts in the UK and got a website for a company trying to sell be a loan (presumably to buy a new TV when my existing one breaks On the same subject I was watching a programme about TV 25 years ago and a popular show was "Goodnight Sweetheart" whose main character was a Television Repairman. I imagined todays kids saying "why did anyone repair TVs when you can get a new one at the supermarket".
