Hello everyone, I'm Mitch from France and discovered your forum as I'm looking for some information to repair my old WM-DD11 who has some audio issues ( seems to be a common problem on these). I have no other possibility to play my cassettes as my 30 year Sony double deck is also broken ( cassettes are trapped in it and the doors can't open anymore). So I hope to find some answers here.
Welcome to the forum, @Mitch16V ! Your DD11 might need a recap to solve the audio issues, it seems to be a common problem on this model. What model is your SONY double deck ? Here you can find a list with all capacitors needed for the DD11: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/list-of-common-walkman-capacitors.23/#post-7801
Regarding your TC-D505 deck, I think you need to open it and try to activate the door latches manually. You will likely need to open the doors and remove them in order to take the mechanism out for belt replacement. Something that I found by accident is this: https://fixyouraudio.com/product/sony-tc-d505-motor-gear/ which makes me believe that this gear will also need to be replaced after solving the other problem. Does the unit play the cassettes that are already in ? If the mechanism remained stuck in play, it may be possible that the latch is blocked. I see that the mechanisms are belt driven, so if the belts are gone (very likely), the mechanism might be stuck in play. So, given the info I have found so far, I say it is likely that a belt and gear replacement (4 belts, 2 gears) will likely bring the unit back to life. Maybe other members know this unit or own it and have more info to share.
Thanks for your analyze Valentin, as the unit is not in use since a long time and is disconnected, I have to get to start it on and see if I can play them. I found another french guy on the Sony forum who has the same issues as me on the same unit, but he replaced the belts before the doors locked up. I try to get in touch with him.
I see, in this case it's probably not the belts that cause the problem. When you find out the solution, post it here for future reference, as it seems to be a common problem on this deck.
Well, as I’m curious I tried to connect and play the cassettes but it doesn’t work. So I opened it, it seems that the belts are done. I also managed to take the cassettes out manualy Going to order a belt set and see what happens with new ones
Thanks Mister X, Well got some good and bad news : The good news is about the DD11, I found one already recaped and in a better state then mine for a nice price and also some spare parts to repair mine. It should arrive next week, my tape collection is ready for it. The bad news is about de TC-D505, I received the belts today coming in from Portugal but as I was getting to change them, I saw that they were not the good ones. Sended an email to them to see what to do as they have another ref for the same sony unit and which seems to be the good one. So I'll have to wait a bit to get it functional. I have some issue with the doors also, the windows are falling down. What it is the best way to fix this, heaten them slowely up and push them in place ?
I'd heat them up very slowly, I've got lab-grade heat guns, kind of like blow-dryers for your hair, but I can put in any temp I want. Most of this plastic will start deforming at 130 degrees F so you don't want to get close to that. If the adhesive doesn't want to let go, you might need something like Goo Gone, something that won't damage the plastic.
I started a thread on the tc-d505, will continue the conversation over there https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/sony-tc-d505.7162/
