I have two Panasonic RX-DT55 Boomboxes that both have the same problem, they will only play certain recorded cd's. For example, they will play a UB 40 cd but will not play a Led Zeppelin cd, and it's the same result for either player. I also have a RX-DT707 and that will play any cd, any idea's anybody ?

Just to be clear, your using formerly blank CDs with music recorded on them, as opposed to MP3s? I've never had a problem with store-bought CDs unless they get scratched. With the CDs I make for myself, and I do a few every month, I use Verbatim 80 minute CD-R and they seem to play in every player.

Some brands and types of recordable CDs will not work in certain players, I don't know the reason but I've had a few times where I've recorded a CD, listened to it in the car, then it wouldn't play on the office player.

No, not home recorded blank CD's but genuine original store bought that is recorded by the likes of Decca or EMI. There must be a digital difference between differing titles, i'm stumped.

Yes I have heard of that happening, funnily enough with a colleagues Led Zeppelin CD. However that was about thirty years ago. A different colleague has told the story about how he took back a Philips CD player which was selective about what CDs it would play and swapped it for a Sony on the basis that the demo unit it the shop played all the ones the Philips was have problems with. That was even longer ago though.

Like everything else, both CDs and the players are made to tolerences, and if both are a long way off you will have problems.

Techmoan was recently asking about a CD player he had that would play 3" CD singles but not full size CDs. The concensus was that the spindle motor was on the way out and couldn't spin a full size CD. Something worth checking is whatever grips the CD in the centre. Is the Led Zeppelin CD shinier and not being held properly?

Various ideas but without specialist test equipment you might never know. @Jorge is the expert on setting up CD players so he might have some ideas.

@adespin To answer your Q in one word - Yes, this happens often when reviving old CD players! Can happen even to some modern hi-end spinners, read through the end of my blog here:
    WADIA 781: TAMING THE BEAST
and then a bit of my research on the subject here:
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. CD PRESSING QUALITY

You get such symptoms when any of the following happens:
    1) Bad CD (warped, unbalanced, too thick/too thin, bad aluminum plating)
    2) Dying/weak laser
    3) Laser calibration drifted off the specs because of aging electrolytics
    4) Spindle motor is getting Bad
    5) Spindle platter got pushed down or up the motor shaft during CD exchange

(aging grease on laser sled gives different problems)

You can eliminate some of these suspects by doing a few simple tests:
    a) Play CD-R/CD-RW and see what happens
    b) play skip-test CD to see what happens
    c) try unplayable CD when player/boombox is at 45 or 90 degree angle, and when it is upside-down
    d) note the year when unplayable CD was pressed

I presume that you cleaned CD platter and magnetic puck. Clean the lens with professional lens cleaner using a bit of cotton on a toothpick. Use Zeiss Lens Cleaner and lens blower, NEVER use soap, alcohol, Windex, or Blu-Tack to clean the lens o_O

    REPORT BACK :)

(((sorry for not visiting you guys more often, I fell behind my continuing education points and now going thru a bunch of f*** exams)))

That's a very informative read, i thought that all CD's were the same and the problem was with the radio's, but i see that is not always the case.

Yes Reno, that was some years ago, i forget how many, i still have the 707 after fixing the cd laser with one out of a nackered DT07. Do you still have the JVC M80 that we swapped ? By the way that's a very nice DT 9 that you have.

Yes, Llanelli as a town is no longer a town but a collection of charity shops, all the main shops have moved out to the retail parks.
