Hi everybody! I've got a WM-55 walkman, changed rubber belt, so now it rewinds a cassette well in both directions But it does not play cassette and I can't get the cause There's a video below, maybe somebody knows how to fix it? And there's a video from the other side: youtube link There's a service manual: google drive link
Hi, From what I can see in the video, the takeup reel does not turn when in play, hence the autostop mechanism engages and stops the unit. What I would check is the clutch (I highlighted it in the picture attached), because that clutch would only be engaged in play, not in FF/REW. Either the clutch is slipping or there are some gears that have hardened grease on their shafts and are very hard to turn. Check that everything is moving freely. Good luck !
Thank you so much Valentin! You pointed me to the problem There's an idler wheel under flywheel And it looks like there's not enough friction. Don't know why Disassembled Idler looks like this: That rubber ring has a circular cross-section I am not sure that it's an original part For some reason, people sell that idler rings with square cross-section For example: ebay I cleaned it and assembled walkman again, but it didn't help much. It slowly spins a cassette, but still not enough So I am waiting for new rings with square cross-section, hope it will help FYI WM-55 idler disassembly video If somebody has an image of the original idler from Sony WM-55, I'll be very grateful!
You're welcome If you have photos or videos of your Sony WM-55 components, I'll be happy to see them. I need some info on how the original idler ring looks like
You won't need a picture with the original idler. Mihokm is a member of this forum and his parts are very high quality and identical in shape to the original. The original one was square section for sure (all idlers are square section), like the one Mihokm sells on ebay. The one in your picture is not an idler tire, but an o-ring that was used as a substitute. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I'm glad you found the problem ! Given that you have taken the flywheel out, I also recommend putting oil in the bushings of both flywheels. And of course clean the capstan after that so it won't contaminate the tape and pinch roller.
Same problem with my SONY WM-F60,maybe this is a general problem ,I have ordered one new idler to replace the old one ,if it work I will post here . [GALLERY=media, 1683]idler gear by neachnow posted Jun 22, 2021 at 3:08 PM[/GALLERY]
