What is cassette tape? It is 1/8-inch tape that was used in other applications besides Compact Cassette. Here is 1991 Nagra SN pictured beside a walkman with an R2R tape cassette (it is a frame grab from my video about R2R cassettes). This is one of the few cases when I like the look of R2R cassettes.
And here is the latest Techmoan's video about a 2004 machine that also uses cassette tape. Cannot lie, I am as enamored by this machine as he is. It actually works, not just a cheap novelty.
I also watched this video, the tape recorder is an absolute disaster, a real fake In all seriousness, a cassette deck was taken and built into a tape with a rubber drive, which is not normal That has absolutely nothing to do with a classic Reel to Reel tape recorder, no, not at all, I had a thierack and that made a world of difference If you consider that this fake tape recorder costs I wonder what you want to achieve with it - the wobble is catastrophic
Yeah, I wish he tested it for wow & flutter. But it looks cool. And it is not a real fake, it works, even though using tape on reels instead of a cassette is absolutely unnecessary. I've been wondering where Philips sourced tape from for its Compact Cassette. Did they develop it anew, or there already have been 0.15-inch tape used for different purposes? This page by Richard Hess lists several other formats besides Compact Cassette that used 0.15-inch tape. I wonder who was the first to develop this tape. Because other than narrower tape, there is nothing much that Philips developed in Compact Cassette that has not been done by RCA for its tape cartridge. I have always scoffed on the idea that Philips "invented" Compact Cassette. To me, what they've done they improved the existing design, invented by RCA.
I like to watch his videos, even if I don't understand everything, I can clearly see what he explains and I think this flutter measuring device is great, yes, the tape machine looks great, but the technology is really cheap, a pity.
Yes, I also thought these RCA cassettes were cool already so far from the technology itself they had autoreverse, it could be that Philips just copied the whole thing again and re-launched it with a narrower band.
@ CDV: well made clip, mate i like the comparisson of the SN to a portable unit, here‘s my suggest for a prtablecasette-player, a SonyWM-504:
@autoreverser, normally, I consider reel-to-reel cassettes silly, but here it looks so cool! I like that the reels are red, I like that they have round holes, I like that the cover is transparent. I wish it was not smoked. Are these yours? If you made it on solid white background, someone would definitely steal this photo for their collection EDIT: Here is Hugo's. But I like the reels in yours more! So now I want two walkmans: a DD33 and a WM504
yes, sir - my units, my reels, my cassette - i promise better pics (was just done quickly with mobilphone and bad light)
yep, i do so and it works well. you must use „normal“ tape, no „chrome“ or „metal“ the nagra doesn‘t erase those.
