Ok, not really, but I'm Mat from the UK and looking for guidance on valuation of a Walkman someone wants to buy off me. Now I'm not looking to break rules and add details and put for sale etc. But how can I find/estimate the value of this so I can answer the offer.
I do understand that value is in the eye of the beholder, but this is in excellent condition, and walkman-archive states this as extremely rare.
Not looking to be greedy, but do want to be fair
    Thanks
    Mat

Try eBay and check what similar items actually sold for.

    Hello and welcome !

You must tell us which model are you talking about, otherwise we can't give you exact details.
What I can tell you is this: the fact that a model is rare is only half of the whole: if a certain model is not demanded by collectors, being rare or super rare is irrelevant.
On the other hand, if a model is demanded a lot, price will naturally be higher, even if the particular model isn't actually rare. If it's both demanded and rare, then obviously price would be even higher.

And of course, at the end of the day it all resumes to what the buyer is willing to pay. If it's something that's super demanded and rare, you can push the price higher.
It all depends how confident you are in selling that device. If you think there are 10 people willing to buy it now, you afford pushing the price high. If there are only 2 people, you can't afford to push as much.

I agree with what @TooCooL4 said, but want to emphasize: look at completed auctions/sales. The fact that device is listed at price X doesn't mean that's the price people are willing to pay. A lot of the prices are speculative.

I don't/didn't want to post details, and break forum rules around selling stuff which is ultimately what I will be doing. I would love to restore it to it's former glory but I just have too many other things going on and would rather it be loved then stay in my draw... and if it means a nice donation to my beer funds even better :) - It's a Aiwa from the late 80s though that I bought brand new

I personally appreciate the fact that you don't want to post the details, as people may tend to take the price we would say here as a reference in the future and that is, in my opinion, not a good idea.

Ok, I have an idea if you say Aiwa from late 80s. I had a feeling it was an Aiwa, seems I was right :).
My opinion is it really depends what problems does it have. If it's just a new belt is one thing, if there is corrosion on the PCB it's another.
I recently had a high end Aiwa from a forum member who sent it so I make an assesment if it can be repaired (he received it for free).
After investigating and seeing a lot of corrosion on the PCB, I decided not to proceed futher, there would have been too much work without any guarantee that it will be a fix in the end.

So look online and see if you can find references of completed sales prices. I agree that it's better to sell it (even at a lower price) to someone who will repair and use it than to keep it in a drawer.

Welcome to the forum! I don't have an issue with value but in the early days of audio forums any mention of prices used to set off multiple alarms with the belief that the now exposed value would make it impossible to find a bargain. I recently started the thread with a JVC M90 on ebay to see auction value, normally these sell BIN and they've been listed for thousands of USD's for years.

As someone who has been monitoring audio (I've got a little of everything) pricing for 20 years I can tell you it's all over the place. I've picked up some huge bargains because nobody is buying around the holidays and mid-summer. There's two AIWA's that tend to get silly money, both are gold and have been discussed on this forum, one is the limited edition givin out to audio executives and musicians, that one seems to be the "most expensive portable" but the buyer's market is very small, a few are on this forum. The other gold model is always listed for sale, and I don't think as rare as most seller's indicate, for good money; the going sales value seems about 1/4 of the average asking price.

We have an area to list items for sale, you could always post it and see what offers other members have for it, at the very least take some photos and post either before or after the sale.

My "Extremely Rare" comes from the Walkman archive - be it true or not I don't know. If the offer I was given is roughly on the money I will honour that first - I believe that is fair.

What a nice and rare one! Is it light reflection, or is the door dented?

When was it fully restored with new caps etc?
That will make a big difference to the price.
My AIWA PX101 was fully restored by magnetic blood with amazing results.

No dents, all perfect, not been restored. I've a buyer who wants it and I want to validate the offer really. I would love to do it, but just too many other projects on the go

It' always nice to move on to a new home, I'm just curious, how did you find it? Sometimes the backstory is more interesting then anything else.

Stick around, hopefully you have more nice players.

So what did you sell it for? Just so we have a reference for the future?
