Good to see some love for hi-tech radios. Have you seen this thread which includes my Synthesized Toshiba with a bar-graph display
    http://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/walkman-and-other-personal-headphone-radios.3173/

I'm old enough to remember when digital display on radios were Hi-Tech. In 1979 a guy i was working for bought an Ambit frequency counter module, hooked it up to a normal tuner and impressed everyone in the department by having a a radio that displayed the frequency as a number Shortly after classmates bought the display less Sony you mentioned then a 2001 which really seemed as if it was from that date. Where did Sharp fit in the timeline? They seemed to be the first to put synthesized tuning in boomboxes.

Another classic ad member Retro posted in 2012. The Toshiba GP-23S actually has James Bond in it, no idea when the player came out. I love the suitcase models, some are amazing build quality but they can be hard to find.

Another cool ad from Twitter, Toshiba KT-RS1, check out the radio pack plugged into the MIC input. It looks like they also had a solar panel, the TC-34S

Toshiba XR-J9 from 1986, this is not a portable, it's just a tiny CD player!

Toshiba RT-7096 from 1986. I've posted some smaller versions of this ad, this is the full-size jumbo-tron version. I got lucky and have found two yard sale versions. They're larger, a little plasticy, kinda heavy so most didn't do portable duty. Highly recommended for those that like the first portable CD boomboxes. The top round speakers are actually passive cardboard discs that lose their glue.

Toshiba KT-210, an early portable recorder with music highlighted in the ad. The machine has an interesting feature called the "TAPE EYE" I imagine it reads the beginning and end of the tape with light but I don't know for sure. Just like vinyl albums, some of the early players didn't automatically shut off at the end of the tape, you just heard the squeal of the motor.

The Walky, unfortunately I didn't label these, I think the OP was on twitter? Some neat stuff, I'll have to google Tomoyo. Check out the rewinder, I wonder if there was ever a Walkman Branded rewinder. I was just watching a YouTube Video where the host was talking about the word "rewind" and it's still being used even though it was from old media.
