Hi everyone! I've recently made a very good bargain with a WM-D3, and am repairing/replacing its center gear. In the process of doing so, I realized that the gear for the supply reel was broken, hence removed it for replacement. Unfortunately, while consulting the service manual to re-assemble, I see that there should be a spring going between the reel and the gear: This spring is missing, and I'm 95% sure I didn't loose anything while dissambling the reel. Is this spring essential? Could it be missing from factory? What would be the impact of re-assembling without such spring? I'm a bit confused … Assuming I need to build a new one, I was think of something made out of a guitar string (e.g. gauge 8), any other advice? Then, I also have a question regarding lubing: I see some old black goo there, and am wondering what kind of grease I should put there. I have 2 options: - some photographic grease for helicoidals (which I have in stock in grade 250 - https://www.ebay.com/itm/255687046243?hash=item3b8822b463:g:chQAAOSwBLlVKJzv) - some SuperLube (which I can buy there: https://www.galaxus.ch/en/s1/produc...e-accessories-3d-printer-accessories-22656576) What would be the recommendation from the experts? Thanks a lot for your help and advices! Cheers, Dominique
I can't remember for sure if I have seen any D3 to have that spring, but I incline to say WM-D3s don't have it installed. The spring's purpose would be for backtension. But there is another source of resistance in the gear connected to the supply reel and in the WM-D3 there's also resistance from the coutner. So that spring is not really needed. Won't take the manual as a 100% correct reference as there can be minor changes between the design phase and the production phase. For example I remember another forum member pointing out that on the TC-D5M service manual the picture is showing 3 washers on the capstan/flywheel assy, when in reality there are just 2 of them. About lubrication, I recommend cleaning the grease and using watch oil instead (any watch oil will do). The only points where grease should be used are the following: - buttons (where they contact the mechanism and also below) - plastic slider; - center gear magnetic clutch (where it rubs against the plastic hub); - center gear claws (the 3 ones that engage with the plastic slider); - on the back of the flywheel thrust adjustment screw; - the ball bearings that hold the head carriage (if you remove it to replace pinch roller/adjust alignment); On everything else, use oil instead.
Thanks Valentin! I'm relieved, confirms my feeling that I didn't loose anything as I was pretty careful and almost certain I didn't. Regarding the manual, I can indeed see at least another gap - e.g. it says the PCB board should be secured by 5 screws when actually there are only 4 (as confirmed in https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/reassembling-the-sony-wm-d3.1708/) - so can be confusing for newbies like me. Will follow your recommendations for lubrication
Yes, I can confirm there are only 4 screws + 2 addtional self-tapping ones that hold the side bracket which goes over the jacks and potentiometers. The threads for the 5th screw are there, but they likely decided it's not really needed. But given manuals were printed back then, updating it wasn't as simple as it is nowadays. There's a similar situation with the WM-DD33 on which the PCB is held only by 3 screws despite a 4th one could be fitted. I have also seen minor errors in SONY service manuals, including on schematics so won't really trust them to the letter despite they're generally very well written.
