A new member here from England, and I’m looking for a little help!

My sister and I are having a debate and are trying to remember a boombox that we had with us on holiday in 1988 in England. It was nothing fancy, a long slim black colour, single tape deck boombox, with a long handle on top.

We think we got it possible for Christmas 1987 or in early 1988, but we both agree we definitely had it in the summer of 1988.

I think it could be the Sanyo U4-S8 (as it looks a lot like the one in the picture) however my sister thinks it was a different make of boombox although, but does it agree it looks very similar.

Any help would be much appreciated and hopefully we can stop ourselves from going mad trying to remember what make/model the boombox it was

That's a great story! These "find my old boombox" mystery quests are good fun  Best of luck

(I struggled to find the model of an old Sanyo my father bought in 1990 to try out shortwave during the Gulf War to tune into BBC and so on. Single tape and long handle on top. I managed to track down the model that it was a few years back.. but since lost / forgot what it was!)

    Thank you,

it’s been driving us nuts for years and not once is the boombox in question been in any of our family pics.

My sister thinks it might be the Sanyo M7024a, as she swears our boombox had squared speakers. Now if we knew what year this was released, around 87/88, then we could narrow it down

    Update:

My 81 year old Mum said they bought it from either Rumbelows or Curry’s in 1988 and it cost about £20ish. She said it was a cheap named brand and had plastic black buttons on the top.

Nothing fancy at all (her words lol) just a long slim mini black ghetto blaster, with a long handle on top, and plastic buttons for the single tape deck cassette.

Since it wasn’t a named brand, I’m guessing we’ll never know what make/model we owned, but it was definitely bought in 1988

Good luck, we all remember little pieces of those old portables but it's really hard to narrow it down. I found my first one after 15 years through an Ebay Listing.

Wow, I’m glad you managed to find yours. I’ll probably just buy one that lols similar to what I remember for nostalgia reasons lol.

Tricky this one. 1987, single cassette, buttons on top, black, from Currys or Rumbelows, & maybe squared speaker grilles.
Almost certainly not a brand like Sony, Sanyo, etc. as even then, £20 was very cheap for any stereo radio cassette. Looking at the 1987 Argos catalog (https://issuu.com/retromash/docs/argossuperstore-1987-autumnwinter) the very cheapest was £30 which does fit your description:

If you can recall the brand it would be a big help :)

Try looking in Argos catalogs at the website above & on eBay (I tried "matsui boombox black") & got things like this:

Damn, that “matsui” looks just like it. That’s the closest I’ve seen to it and I swear that’s the one.

Here's an eBay listing (which I'm not linked to in any way - caveat emptor & all that)
Guess how much it's going for...! :)

The tape player not working is almost certainly a) the drive belt & b) a pretty easy fix

$26.06 US dollars but this is in the UK and I have to ask him to ship it to me and I sure as heck don't want this little tiny thing. You go for it. I have way too many boomboxes and I don't want this one but I had to look at the listing. I have to ask the seller for a price to ship it. It's like no not me. I got way too many other things going on.

I get it - it's about sentimental value.
Personally, I love the little Philips D8132 because it was my very first stereo boombox.
It's nothing special, but it's special to me.

Good luck in your search, Derek :)
