In 1975, Audio System Components GmbH (ASC) introduced the AS 5002 Reel-to-Reel tape recorder. This product defined high-fidelity audio standards and stood the test of time, with production continuing for an impressive 12 years. The longevity and success of this model can be attributed to its superior engineering, thoughtful design, and dedication to quality—a hallmark of ASC's legacy since its inception in Germany in 1964.

ASC began its journey focusing on language training systems utilizing Braun tape recorders. Later, ASC leveraged its expertise to develop its line of devices, maintaining a stylistic and technical kinship with Braun’s products. This transition proved to be a strategic move, cementing ASC's reputation for excellence. The AS 5002, part of the esteemed AS 5000 series, exemplifies this heritage, blending advanced engineering with practical functionality.

The AS 5002 is a testament to meticulous design and precision engineering. Its 3-motor drive system, electronically controlled tape and braking mechanisms, and wear-resistant sound heads ensure reliable and high-quality performance. This model was rigorously tested in professional language laboratories, earning its "certificate of maturity" by meeting the stringent demands for operational safety, ease of use, and longevity.

The tape recorder’s ability to maintain precise target speed, minimal pitch fluctuations, and a wide frequency range across all tape speeds (4.75, 9.5, and 19 cm/s) showcases its HiFi capabilities. The AS 5002’s signal-to-noise ratio of 60 dB, combined with the use of ASC’s special magnetic tape DPR 5000 LH, delivers exceptional audio clarity and durability. The frequency response is from 20 to 25,000 Hz (±3 dB at 19 cm/sec).

The AS 5002 features a clear and intuitive layout designed with the user in mind. The operating elements are ergonomically placed, ensuring seamless functionality. Four toggle switches located below the head support flap offer straightforward control, clearly displaying switch positions for ease of use.

The tape recorder also boasts innovative features such as an electronically controlled braking system that protects the tape from damage, and an electronic tape tension control that maintains consistent tape tension regardless of reel diameter. These features underscore ASC’s commitment to preserving tape integrity and extending the lifespan of both the tape and the device.

The AS 5002’s versatility extends beyond mere audio recording and playback. It includes two microphone sockets for low-impedance microphones and a headphone connection, making it ideal for various audio applications. The 4-channel mixer allows for intricate audio mixing, enhancing the recorder’s utility for both amateur and professional users.

Moreover, the AS 5002 has advanced functions such as pre-and post-tape control, cue setup, and multiplay capabilities, allowing users to copy tracks and add new audio signals. The echo circuit feature adds a temporal echo effect, enriching the audio recording experience. Additionally, the repeat button simplifies operation by enabling quick rewind and playback, a feature particularly beneficial for language training and audio editing.

The robust construction of the AS 5002 includes a torsionally rigid sheet steel chassis, ensuring durability. The use of high-quality materials like RECOVAC® for sound heads and a solid metal framework further enhances the device's longevity. The modular design allows easy access for maintenance and repairs, making it a practical choice for long-term use. The device's dimensions are 155×345×430 mm, weighing 18 kg.

In 1981 ASC took over Uher's speech training systems division and became the sole distributor in 1982. The RRP for the AS 5002 in Germany in 1975 was DM 1,800.00, which is approximately 3,000.00 euros today.

I like the German Design, we got very little over here so it stands out for me.

It looks like most of your decks work, do you have any favorites with these heart of the line models?

I have 117 reel-to-reel tape recorders in my museum collection, and I love them all. However, my favorites for regular use are TEAC A-3300SX and AKAI GX-210D.

Nice, I'm glad they are coming back a little bit, I always bought the nicer ones when they popped up for sale but there really wasn't many around. My old neighbor had two, I think they were those TEAC's, he alway said he'd give them to me when he got older, he's around 90 now and still lifting weights.
