Agree Reli. I don’t think the price is unreasonable for the style and rich feature set. Most importantly, I hope it sounds good. My best guess is that it will sound better than a true upper tier vintage unit, but will fall short of exceptional sounding products like the Tivoli Songbook Max or the new WAR boombox. I think I could live with that. While we’re on the subject, I previously owned two Sharp GF-777’s and if I’m being super honest, I didn’t think they sounded that great. So for the BB-777 it’s a low-ish bar.
You're correct, the GF-777 was never a hifi box. The bass is muddy when you push it. The Bumpboxx hits harder and goes deeper. I've played with it a couple times at their company office, and it handles hiphop and electro really well. I didn't try other music genres though.
Any thoughts on the treble when you listened to it? 4 tweeters (2 horn, 2 dome) had me concerned right out of the gate. Two quality domes seem like a better choice. Brash, crashy treble would really kill it for me.
I didn't notice harsh treble, but I think you would need to listen to classical or acoustic music to really get a sense of that. I don't know what Techmoan listens to or where he set the tone settings.
It makes me wonder why they chose 2 horns and 2 domes. I sold audio for years back in the mid to late 1980’s…everything from low end boomboxes to Harman Kardon and Advent. In all my travels I’ve never seen an Audio company put 4 tweeters on a speaker set up, let alone mixing domes and horns. I can’t figure out why they made that choice. In the end I’m not sure I care if there’s solid fidelity.
i knew a few people who had a 777 in the 80‘es and they all finally either had other spaekers fitted, or solt the box. i used to have one for many years, with original speakers and i agree: shitty box ( but nicee !). this remake is great, i consider one.
I've actually seen lots of home speakers with multiple tweeters. Check out the 5 tweeters on the Micro Acoustics FRM-1 and FRM-1AX One of the Bumpboxx guys said they were worried that the horns wouldn't be enough because they were too directional. Horns aren't any good if they're small and your ears aren't lined up with them.
