Trying to fix an Aiwa CA W30 that had disintegrated belts, and all four little white plastic spring retaining things (two clutches, two pause button latchy things) decided after 35 years in darkness they preferred to roam free in the light...

I've been able to print replacements, but the pause button latch things have springs behind them, roughly 5mm long and maybe 3mm diameter. One has emancipated itself, never to be seen again, the other might've done the same.

What I can't work out though, is *why* there are springs there in the first place. When I use my printed white retaining cap things without springs, the pause still seems to latch/ unlatch perfectly fine as long as I get the caps pushed down "just right".

So... Do I really need those springs? Do they serve some greater purpose that means this Aiwa will be doomed forever if I don't spring it up?
