    I would say "NO"
There is nothing special about this unit. Try to got yourself a boombox or walkman rather than a Hifi unit.
If you don't want anything portable then a cassette deck can be a good alternative.

I don't know anything about that particular model, but 15+ year old shelf systems like that usually go really cheap, like $50-75 tops..

I have a similar Panasonic (except it has a five disc CD autochanger) which I bought with the original (rather poor sounding) speakers fully working in a Charity Shop for £35. I wouldn't say don't buy it if it is what you really want, but for $100 I would expect a decent guarantee on a new old stock unit.

It depends on what Freshfinds wants. If a CD player and remote control are on his wish list then something more modern than the Sanyo would be appropriate. However, systems like the Aiwa he was looking at weren't expensive in the first place.

A friend of mine had one in her bedsit and was happy with it though.

If you would be happy with a single CD and single cassette deck, here in the UK I keep seeing more upmarket mini-systems like Technics for about the same price

Yep, look for true separate component stacks, like that Technics. Aiwa made some like that too, like the XR-M99.

If you want an even more modern system, with USB ports, look for a used Denon D-M38 or 39, they sound terrific.

A friend had a Aiwa compact stereo in his garage... and by the time he offered it to me, the only things of value to it were the speakers.

I have seen these branded by four different companies. Akai, Sanyo, Sears and Tensai.
First impression is they have an amazing sound. Better sound than the mini systems (Sony, Technics, Nad) that came out 20 years later.
    That is not a lie.
And it's all real metal. It would survive an earthquake and a forest fire.
They are built like a brick. Not like the Sony Mini Hifi's from 2000.
I picked up this Tensai for €17 at a Sunday market this week. A few scrapes but internally perfect.
It has Long Wave instead of Short Wave. I think that's the only difference compared to the Sanyo version.
It's hard not to be amazed and baffled at the quality of the build from 43 years ago.
Think back to when you paid your bucks and got a decent build.
I just gave it a clean. Thats all I needed to do. Quality lasts.
I think when they came out in 1979 they were £699.

Thanks for posting MICHAEL MURRY, I had no idea they had other AKA's, I do have the Sanyo D8 Version but had no idea about the TENSAI Version and you've seen AKAI?

Big money in 79 but you can see the quality, I think in the USA we liked everything huge so mini-stereos are kind of rare. There's a thread down below somewhere with mini-systems, you should also post this one, it has to be pretty unique. When I get some time I'll post some of my other mini's down there.

Thanks. I have seen the Sears one that is identical online and a very similar Akai.
I think Akai were called Tensai originally.
Ill move the photo to mini systems.
