Hanging out in the bunker tonight trying to clean some stuff up and listen to some good music, a la cassette. Something up in the racks was speaking to me, for some reason, while looking at tape decks to maybe find one to re-belt, I spied this Technics M28. I already had my Onkyo TX-6000 Reciever plugged in and working, I've always loved Onkyo, they were a little different but kind of refine and this one fired up after sitting for a long time. I completed the set-up with some smaller speakers, little Polk's that I had re-glued the back magnet on. 80's Polk Speakers had bad epoxy, the magnets separated from the basket. With a home-made centering jig I re-glued these and they've worked fine. The Technics fired right up and sounded nuts-on, I was so excited I grabbed my 1980 Rolling Stones Emotional Rescue Cassette and cranked it up. The Technics has an output level dial that needs to be cleaned but for the most part, it sounded really good, better than my MP3's. It's amazing that a 40 year old pre-recorded tape can sound this good but it did. I had another Scotch Type 1 I had recorded Nine Inch Nails on and it sounded almost the same as it did in the 90's, crappy but good enough for the beach. Someone gave me the tapes new and I lived with them, but yes they are still garbage, although they sound the same, even 30 years later.
