Good evening all of you out there. I have another Philips D8814 Boombox with a rather interesting fault. Everything functions quite well, but before i strip it and re-furbish it, i have a little annoyance when the unit is powered on and set to "line in". i get a regular "tap, tap, tap" pulsing noise and it shows itself on the level bar too. even when playing from an IPOD source via the line in you can still hear this pulse. Any other setting and it goes away (or is masked), tried 1K from line in to earth and makes no difference. i notice if i set unit to line in and turn it off for 10 seconds then back on again, it takes 5 to 10 seconds before tapping away again and showing on the level bar. (i cannot upload a video so i have uploaded a zip file containing a voice recorder file of the sound from turning on through to turning off). i am wondering whether i have a bad cap possibly on the PSU which start to fail after a few seconds. Anyway, before i start removing the PSU caps and testing them i would really appreciate any ideas from other members. i have a reasonable electronics toolkit including a scope. i have put my other unit in the same location and under the same conditions and i get no pulsing tapping noise. it is definitely not mechanical noise. Ps, on a previous post belonging to someone else (called Elephant Surgery) i uploaded a document showing the strip down procedure for the cassette unit to extract the commonly faulty gears if it's of any use to others. I had to make the replacement gears myself and the success was ok for a 1st attempt, the gears need making from a slightly soft-ish rubber like material i think to keep mechanical noise eliminated.
