My name is Travis, I'm living south of Tokyo, Japan, and have recently become more interested in older music, and require new (old?) hardware to enjoy it. I purchased a used, not working Sony WM-W800 dual cassette from eBay. I figured it would need new belts at the very least, seeing as it is 30+ years old, so I ordered a set of belts from a seller called mihokm in Slovakia at the same time. The Sony arrived in the mail today from Alaska, and I tested it out. I can hear the motor spin when I press play on Side A, but nothing at all on Side B. I broke out the screwdrivers and got it apart with relative ease. As I suspected, no belts at all left, just the nasty black, stick-to-everything goop inside. It also seems that a battery has leaked at some point in the last 32 years (date stamp inside reads 85 7 1) and there was a lot of cleaning to do. Afterwards, Side B started working, so I suspect that it was the battery acid leak that caused a short, and that cleaning it cleared up the problem. The rollers seem to be ok, but the pause slider button is missing. Anyone have any ideas where I could get one?
Welcome here. I'm glad to have members from Japan. I'm sure many of us would like to be there for a while... As for your technical question, better post it in the proper forum. Regards,
Welcome Agree with @walkman archive that Japan is the place to be for cassette lovers! But you got yours from Alaska
This pause slider button is one of the weaknesses of WM-W800 walkman. It breaks and comes out of its spot.
Thanks everyone! I'll have to go hit up some of the used goods shops and see what I can come up with!
You might be able to fabricate the part from scratch, I haven't done this method yet but I believe we had a member years ago that use to do a ton of different parts. This article describes the basics, it would be nice to have an original part for the mold but you might have to carve one out of wood or clay or machine it if you have access to a machine shop. http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-plastic-parts-from-scratch/ There's a lot of information on this process on the web and youtube, good luck!
Good luck and i hope that you finish the restoration of your WM-W800, it's a rare or curious walkman. Welcome
