This won't mean anything to anyone outside the U.K. or under 40, but it is Forty Years to the day since Citizens Band radio was legalised in the U.K. On that day I used CB for the first time and was given my Handle / Username "Longman" by the rigs owner.

On Thursday I am giving a lecture about it.
Luckily I found lots of the information I needed on this site
    https://80sactual.blogspot.com/2007/08/cb-radio.html

which also has various other random 1980s musings.

I never got to mess around too much with a CB but they were everywhere in the 70's. It was such an amazing device and pretty much showed that portable phones had the potential to take over the world. Now I watch end of the world movies and it's the guys with the old CBs that can still comunicate.

I have maybe two old units around here, picked them up when they used to give em away. I think truckers still use them a little bit, especially in bad cell areas.

This was the song then the film that got people interested in CB in the U.K.

So popular there was a spoof version of the song

A few years later "The Dukes of Hazzard" was prime time viewing just after Tea Time on Saturday.
The Dukes seemed to use CB like people use Mobile Phones today, usually to call Cooter get him to come and pull "The General" out of a ditch.

Hence the question "Why can't we have C.B. ?"

Awesome movie, the director brought in truck loads of white sand for the opening sequence. The government didn't like for us to communicate long distance, there were mods that jacked up the range quite a bit but it was illegal. I used to turn mine on 15 years ago when I was traveling long distance and I'd get some chatter but mostly just one-way talking, like podcasts.
