Greetings! I recently came into getting a couple of cassette decks to repair. One is a full logic unit and one is an older "piano key" type. These are on the opposite sides of the high tech category.; yet after it seemed the repairs were finalised, both share a common problem: Both record well on a tape of 60 minutes or less, but when using a tape 90 minutes or above, the right channel is muffled, no recording at all, or both problems intermittent - alternatively. It doesn't matter what tape type I use. However, a tape previously recorded of any length will play back perfectly. Any ideas? Thanks.
It could be a lot of things but check the spring loaded pad behind the tape where the head is, you may have a batch where they fell off. Parts of the transport might be hard or the belt might be slack enough that the extra tension of the tape might not let it go through at normal speed. I'm just guessing but we need some more answers like do the tapes record ok on other decks?
The spring loaded pads on both look fine; I just checked. As far as the tapes recording on other decks, they turn out fine.
