I have a love and fascination for retro computers and midi synthesizers and have recently had a yearning for cassettes. I've never had much experience on this subject so I'm here to pick your brains! I grew up with VHS, cassettes, and kid-sized vinyl records and I love all things 90s. When it comes to retro audio, I enjoy watching YouTube channels 8-bit Keys, Techmoan, and Technology Connections.
Welcome. Welcome and keep your eyes open, while the auction sites are getting big dollars these days, there's a ton of cool stuff everywhere just waiting for a loving home. I just picked up a huge stack of equipment for cheap from a family ready to move on. I have a lot of fun just finding equipment and they sold millions of this stuff and people still have it tucked away. I've got a couple TOTL VHS players I've kept for my vintage system, it's been long enough were people think it's cool again, the units look like they're out of NASA so they still get a little respect. Most of this equipment needs belts so your going to want to learn replacement, it can be either super-easy or extremely difficult and might land you on the "beer and boomboxes" thread.
I wonder if VHS players will ever become trendy again. Somehow I doubt it especially as TVs loose their analogue inputs. I might have mentioned before how in 1986 the people I was buying my £24000 house from had a TOTL £600 Panasonic Hi-Fi sound VCR, Fast forward about 25 years and I bought a much newer TOTL Panasonic SVHS VCR in full working order from the local charity (thift) store for £12.
I don't think there's a great future for VHS but I'll have the broadcasting unit so I won't need to hardwire mine and I can play to my Watchmans. I feel like they will appeal to the artsy crowd for experimental tv.
Its a good Q if "videophile crowd" will follow us, audiophiles. From what I see, they do not care much. I, for one, do not care at all: streaming, DVD, VHS is all the same to me! Leather-bound books while spinning LPs is a different story!!!
Until you find some rare (possibly home recorded) tape that isn't available anywhere else. Somewhere (that famous word) I have a 3 hour VHS tape of a program broadcast on 31st Dec 1989 looking back at the decades music. I noticed some time ago that Betamax VCRs now fetch a premium over VHS - supply and demand. If you want to get really nerdy, a few people, including a friend have done a lot of work on capturing Teletext off old tapes. That probably won't mean anything to people of Europe. The same friend got Windows displaying on a 405line TV, which won't mean anything to anyone who isn't over 45 and in the UK.
There’s a decent body of work in video art. I saw an exhibition in Düsseldorf a few years ago by a Korean/American artist called Nam June Paik who made some impressive pieces using the format https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nam_June_Paik
I do have some 80's music VHS tapes that I don't think can be found uploaded anywhere. I feel like a retro bar might be cool with some of these old electronics, they'd be cheap to grab and a real attention grabber.
