    Hey all!
I recently purchased a Sony TC-D5M - it's in great condition cosmetically and the seller said it had been recently serviced.
However when I played tapes on the machine they all sounded really quite muffled with very little treble - compared to my Sony Wm D6C.

Are these D5M supposed to sound significantly worse than the D6C? I read that the D6C should sound better - I just didn't imagine by so much.
Ive set the D5M so Dolby NR is off, and tape select is set to type 1/2 - am I missing anything obvious?

I can try and get some playback samples recorded over this week.

    Cheers,
    Charlie

I'd try taping something with it and seeing if there's a difference. Have you cleaned it up good? Here's a nice write up on it and the service manual, hopes this helps, it's a model I'd love to have one of these days.
