Hi, I'm new to Walkman repair so I'm figuring things out as I go. I got a Walkman WM-F5 to fix up for a gift for a friend. I replaced the center gear and oiled it up and got it mostly working. However, while testing, I realized when I press the REW button the gears for rewind and fast forward both activate in opposite directions when there is no tape. This leads to it stalling when a tape is inserted. Here's a video of what's happening. I'm not sure what I did to cause this so any info will be super helpful. Thanks!
Note there is a black lever that needs to go into the white plastic slider. You need to remove the plastic slider again and install it with that lever in the position marked green.
Thanks! That did fix another issue I had with the play not working every once in a while! However, the rewind is still having the same problem.
The REW problem is caused by either the center gear going too low or the FF gear sitting too high. You need to investigate which one is causing the problem. If you have bent the center gear arm, that could be the cause of this problem. Too much up/down gear wobble can also be the cause of the problem. Regarding the FF gear, check if it slides easily up/down on the hexagon. As a sidenote, new hex take-up assemblies are available if needed: https://fixyouraudio.com/product/sony-wm-dd-hex-take-up/ Also no need to quote previous posts, better type in box below and press "Post Reply".
Ah, wasn't sure what the etiquette on replying was. This is great info! Thank you! I tried messing with the gear arm but for a different issue so I could have bent it too much one way. I'll give it another try and also take a look at the FF gear. I'll report back in a few days! Thanks again!
If gear arm has been bent too much, it will result in engaging both reels at the same time after some point. Rather than bending, I recommend using tape like it's described in this thread: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/new-way-to-adjust-wm-dd-ff-rew-gear-skip.8966/ If height adjustment doesn't solve the problem and you need to bend/add tape so much that both gears are engaged problem is the gear/center disc has too much wobble. Case in which the only fix is to use a different gear. I recommend the CNC gear from FixYourAudio if that is the case, you need to ask for it specifically not available on the website. Unfortunately some of these center discs have a lot of wobble, cases in which using a gear with minimal wobble is the only solution.
Luckily, the gear arm wasn't too bent so I was able to get it back into place with a couple nudges. Everything seems to be working perfectly now! Thank you so much for your help I greatly appreciate it!
