I see that this is a Walkman board. Is this the appropriate place to ask about non-Sony brands as well? I see that there is a "Cassette Decks" board but I think a deck refers to the large units to put on shelves. Please forgive my inexperience!

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money but I want to set a bar of quality for what I buy. I have no cassette players at all and don't want to invest in anything that makes up too much space; so a Walkman or similar is perfect for me!

I would like to find something that has a stereo headphone jack and is guaranteed to play at the correct speed, since I don't know recordings well enough to detect whether something is playing too fast or too slow. Sound quality is important but I'm not looking for the best. And visual appearance is unimportant.

I hope to own a Walkman WM-D6 at some point as my ideal cassette player but I know that at this point I just can't appreciate as much as it deserves.

What kind of small cassette player would you recommend for my use?

People usually recommend the WM-EX series by Sony (which I have no experience of, But look good), If speed is of concern Early Sanyo models usually have a pitch control and sound good as well (M6060,M5550, M4440, M4430,M3330, M-G1, M-G2 for example). You can also buy speed calibration tapes on Ebay if you buy one with no pitch control.

What does pitch control have to do with calibration tapes?

I think he is referring to the fact that if you have a walkman with pitch control you can adjust the playback speed to suit, however this is only useful if you know if it is playing to fast or slow.

Might be good to pick up a cheap refurbished unit to start with. I have a few cheap units here that i have cleaned, replaced belts and speed adjusted and they sound far better than their price point suggests. I would of offerred to sell you one but postage from UK may be prohibitive.

Maybe browse ebay for refurbished units.

    welcome to stereo2go Kahenraz

What is your budget for this specific walkman?
Do you have pre-recorded cassette to listen or you want to make your own recording with this walkman?

In my opinion buy a walkman from T-ster who is a well respected and reliable member here.
