Too true !!! The P505 is my first repair and has been a minor disaster so far, while I learn various things. The tants are all I've got, so for this unit I'll use them, because I fully expect it not to work once reassembled. I did an order from Digikey based on the earlier list, and upped the quantities to get the free postage... so I should have enough of all the caps to last. It's just the two tants that I'm going to have to replace with something else now... from a UK supplier, because otherwise the postage will be nuts. I also gave a full list to RSComponents this morning, (before I saw your initial reply) including all the cap physical sizes and ratings, and the purpose that they're for. I'll see what they come back with in a few days.
Don't send a list to them- just search for the part numbers, and add to cart. Sometimes they give you substitute parts that are not right for walkmans. Then you end up wasting money! If no supplier has the exact part number, search for them on their websites yourself! Any electrolytic capacitor that matches the same dimensions and has the same/higher voltage than your originals are likely to work. Look for height 5.4mm or lower! not higher! It will not fit! That is most important! Search by product range, like Panasonic KS or HA series. If one cap fits, the others from the range are likely to fit too! You can PM me the parts that you come up with to check before you buy. Postage is a problem for most people outside of the US- which is why in my capacitor thread I mention certain quantities of caps to buy in bulk to fix more Walkmans in the future, useful if you have/or are starting a collection. Don't go buying from more than 1 supplier if necessary- you pay extra for postage! Find one that has most of the caps you need and sub as needed.
I'm trying to find the caps on Farnell ... but after finding what I think is the Nichion I'm wondering if it is a mm too wide? http://uk.farnell.com/nichicon/uwx0j101mcl1gb/aluminum-electrolytic-capacitor/dp/1823603
I took a look and it turns out Mouser (where I sourced the cap from) put the wrong diameter of their website. It's actually 6.3mm. I'll correct the 2017 caps page. Thanks for pointing this out. 100uf caps that are exactly the same size as the old types are hard to come by. Even though the UWX0J101MCL1GB will fit with some work, you are looking at USA stock on farnell, which will kill you in shipping. I suggest you get this instead, it is also smaller at 5mm diameter : http://uk.farnell.com/panasonic-ele...101war/cap-alu-elec-100uf-6-3v-smd/dp/2326086 For 220uf, you can try the one from the same range: http://uk.farnell.com/panasonic-ele...a221wp/cap-alu-elec-220uf-6-3v-smd/dp/2326089
Thanks for that. I'll add those to the shopping list. The 220 2v... are there smaller ones available, or should I use the 6.3v you've linked above? Also, the old list had (for the 440 thru hole... or was it 470... can't remember and I'm at work) a taller cap that could be bent over. Is this still the case please, or is there something else you'd recommend? (I'm torn between making progress on posts while at work, when I can't read much) - or waiting until I get home where I can read everything. - Decisions, decisions...)
You can always use higher voltage caps. The 6.3V/4V is the smallest available today. For the 470, I recommend measuring first. I believe the UMW would work better as you would not have to mount the cap sideways, saving space. But you must meawsure first, or: just get both the UMW and Poly cap to the cart and see which one works best.
I'm having a problem finding an appropriate through hole cap. I'm obviously searching the wrong terms because the only 470uf I'm finding are 10mm at the smallest. I think 5-6mm is the target, with a 6mm height. I'll check tonight.
You may have to import the UMW if you can't find it locally. Worst case scenario, you will have to substitute with a tant. But a PX303 is worth it!
