Hi! I've recently got my hands on a SONY WM-D6C in excellent aesthetics conditions. I initially had issued with FF/REW and changed a spring to get contact and more or less fixed that issue, but I still have a problem with the wow and flutter. When I play cassette from the start the wow and flutter is not noticeable but, when the pick up reel starts to accumulate tape, the wow and flutter begins to increase, slowing down the tape immensely until it finally stops and activates auto stop. Same with FF/REW, they don't work at the end of the tape as if its not strong enough. If it clues anyone into anything, the FF/REW give up before the main mechanism does. I have also looked into this through this group and followed @Valentin instructions regarding the Capstan being roughened with ferric chloride. but did not help much. I dont know if this is simply an issue of old belts/plastic that need replaced. I feel hopeless and hope someone could point me in the right direction!
If you haven't replaced the rubber in it, that's the thing you should do. Fact you have low torque on FF/REW and on takeup is a tell-tale sign your rubber idlers are slipping. You can get the kit here: https://fixyouraudio.com/product/sony-wm-d6c-cassette-player-walkman-complete-rubber-set/
Wow thank you! I was doubting how much it actually affects it but its now ordered and I'll update once ive replaced the rubber!
Alright, ive replaced it with the full rubber kit, exept the capstan rubber. And its now powerfull enough to go through the tape. So its working. EXEPT, the fw still has low torque. Any ideas as to where the issue lies? Actually scratch that, just tried it again and allthough it initially worked, now it has the samme issue again, take up reel full, it slows down the track... this sucks.
If by FW you're reffering to Fast Forward, I would clean the lever mentioned here: https://stereo2go.com/forums/threads/sony-wm-d6c-no-rewind-ff.4687/ This is, in my opinion, something that should be done with every service even without the symptoms mentioned there. There are situations where the grease on that pin is hardened and despite it moves, being hard to move doesn't put enough pressure on that idler.
Yes sorry i meant the fast forward. all though i have an update: just tried it again and all though it initially worked, now it has the same issue again, take up reel full, it slows down the track... this sucks. Also: The flywheel is engaging fully when the take up reel isnt full, at the start of the track it works fine, but as soon as the track is about 15% left, it starts to really slow down. the fw gives up before the main drive does, but eventually that also stops.
So you have 2 different problems: lack of torque on FF and PLAY and also high W&F when takeup is full ? Not sure what you meant by flywheel is fully engaging/not fully engaging. Please explain in more detail. If it starts to slow down, something is slipping. Does putting more pressure on back of the motor fix this problem ?
